Liz Garland, Roseville, CA State Advocate

Statement of Purpose

I have been a member of Leave No Trace since 2001 and the state advocate for California since 2002. During my tenure as state advocate, I have made communication and partnership with local, state, federal and youth serving agencies a priority. I continue to work closely with Girl Scouts to assure that the national organization is actively encouraging councils across the nation to practice Leave No Trace and make our ethics part of outdoor educational curriculum.

I am excited to see a variety of Master Educator courses being offered in California during 2011. This is in part thanks to a solid partnership with folks at the USFS, NPS, and BLM. Thank you for your support! There is a solid group of Master Educators in Southern California who continue to offer Trainer courses and Awareness workshops to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, in addition to other youth agencies and educational camps. Thanks to each of you for all your efforts!

Outdoor enthusiasts are the key to spreading the ethics of Leave No Trace and I am excited to see that daily more and more Californians are joining the ranks of Leave No Trace supporters. California is a large state so the more adults and youth willing to spread the Leave No Trace message, the more successful our efforts will be! If you want to volunteer at a community event, arrange a trainer course or awareness workshop in your community, or just want to learn more about Leave No Trace, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Each of us can make a difference!

Leave No Trace Trainer Course, Yosemite National Park

Where: Yosemite National Park, California

Who: Anyone who wants to spread LNT principles and practices: outdoor educators, outing guides, scout leaders, professionals building a resume.

Cost: $105

Description: We meet at a less popular trailhead at noon Friday, backpack in about a mile on a steep uphill trail to set up camp in Yosemite Wilderness.  We learn as we hike, camp and explore from a remarkable viewpoint.  We’ll hike out at the end of the day Saturday.  People need to bring all their own food and equipment for an overnight backpack trip.  We’ll supply free entry to Yosemite NP, our Wilderness permit and a bear-proof food canister.  We have free frontcountry campsites set aside for before and after the course on Thursday and Saturday nights in Yosemite Valley, and we have lodging reserved at Curry Village for those nights, for an extra fee.

Gear: Early April should be mild, but we’ll be at about 4500’, so there could be snow, rain or dry heat.  Bring shelter and layers to be prepared for anything.  There are trailhead bear boxes for any excess food.

Instructor: Pete Devine was Yosemite’s first LNT Master Educator and has taught on the park’s trails for twenty years.  He’s an accomplished backpacker, naturalist and teacher.

Contact: www.yosemiteconservancy.org to sign up on line, or call Carolyn at Yosemite Conservancy at 209/379-2646, x10.
