Lisa Deavers, Lexington, KY State Advocate

Statement of Purpose

Having worked with community parks and KY State Parks, one of my goals is to educate as many people as possible on how to minimize impacts on our natural resources. Also, through the partnerships I have developed with other agencies across the state, I hope to expand that partnership to include promoting LNT within their organizations. I am on the board of the Kentucky Recreation Park Society (KRPS) and have been promoting LNT through their annual conferences as well as through weekly programming and special events here at Barren River Lake State Park. I am proud to serve as State Advocate and want everyone to know I am here to assist you in spreading the message about Leave No Trace.

Shepherdsville, Kentucky (1/2 hour S of Louisville, KY; 2 hours S of Indianapolis, IN)

Description: This course will allow participants to learn and practice in an outdoor setting the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace and prepare individuals to act as Leave No Trace-recognized Trainers from Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics (www.lnt.org).  The training includes 16 hours of hands-on instruction and overnight camping.  The first night camping (Friday) will be conducted in a frontcountry setting impacted site and the second night camping (Saturday) will be conducted in a pristine backcountry setting.  Participants will need to hike a short distance to the backcountry site.

As part of the Trainer Course curriculum, participants will also be required to lead a 10-15 minute discussion or presentation on one of the Leave No Trace principles or other impact topic.  Further details and resources will be provided upon registration.  These courses are presented by Green Earth Outdoors, an affiliated partner and approved training provider for the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and the Lincoln Heritage Council, BSA.

Who: Any individual adult or youth at least age 14 interested in learning and practicing the 7 Principles Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics and teaching them to others or general outdoor enthusiasts who want to learn the skills needed to minimize their recreational impacts.  Typical attendees include backpackers, paddlers, Scouts, Venturers, Scout leaders, camp counselors, guides, outdoor groups/clubs, specialty outdoor retail associates and trip leaders.  Every Scouting unit, outdoor organization or club should have at least one Leave No Trace Trainer.   Open to the public.

Cost: $89.00 per person (or $35 for Scouts-see below).  The fee covers all food, snacks and beverages, group equipment, camp fees, training equipment, training materials,  a comprehensive LNT Trainer’s Kit (includes Trainer lapel pin, Trainer patch, LNT sticker, some Leave No Trace gear, posters, reference cards, booklets, pocket guides, videos, training activities, etc.), certificate, and extensive educational support to conduct your own Leave No Trace Awareness Workshops.

Scouts, Scouters and other eligible youth group members from the same unit attending the same course may do so at a reduced fee of only $35 per person (covers all food, snacks and beverages, group equipment, camp fees, training equipment, training materials, LNT sticker, reference card, and certificate) when their unit then purchases separately the LNT Trainer’s Kit for $65.

Green Earth Outdoors volunteers their time and resources to provide this course.

Gear: Participants need to bring their own personal camping equipment (a list is provided upon registration).   Some personal equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and backpacks or dry bags is available for rent at a 25% discount if you don’t have your own.  Visit www.greenearthoutdoors.com  or call 502-475-7445 for details.

Course Times: The course begins with registration and camp set up at 6:00 pm on Friday with the program starting at 7:00 pm.   The course will conclude by 11:00 am on Sunday.

YOUTH MEMBERS: To support the addition of Leave No Trace elements to the Boy Scouts of America (this Trainer Course is required for Boy Scouts who have been appointed to the Position of Responsibility of Leave No Trace Trainer) and Girl Scouts of the USA program, youth (at least age 14) are encouraged to attend.   A parent or registered adult Scouter(s) who is trained and complies with their respective program’s youth protection policies should attend with the youth.

Contact:  Please reserve your spot by registering at least 30 days prior to the session you wish to attend.  This allows us time to have adequate quantities of materials for the course.   To facilitate your preparation for the course, we recommend an earlier registration if possible.   You may register online at: http://www.greenearthoutdoors.com/eventregistrationform.html or by calling our office at 502-475-7445.  Registrations can also be sent via postal mail by providing your name, address, phone, email address, choice of session dates and payment made out to Green Earth Outdoors.  Send to:
