Statement of Purpose

I’m Laurie Harmon and I teach at George Mason University in Manassas, Virginia.

As your Leave No Trace State Advocate, I can offer you event materials and identify Master Educators and Trainers who could assist with workshops and presentations. I’ll strive to share the Leave No Trace information and make connections to teachers, educators, youth, and a variety of public agencies to promote a clear understanding and strong sense of stewardship.

Together, we can build community and positive outdoor ethics.

LEAVE NO TRACE AWARENESS WORKSHOP

Who: Everyone

Description: Those interested in learning the principles of Leave No Trace, families,scouts, hikers, students, trail crews etc. will benefit from this informative session.  Tools will be presented so we can become better outdoors and nature stewards. The goal is to encourage simple acts of environmental activism and teach Leave No Trace principles. It's easy. From teaching a kid the importance of not feeding wildlife,planning and preparing the trip to picking up trash on the trail.I will show you all the ways to LEAVE NO TRACE !

Leave No Trace Trainer Course – Shenandoah National Park, VA

When: Saturday, March 31 – Sunday, April 1

Where: Shenandoah National Park, VA

Who: Adults (18+) with some camping and/or backpacking experience.

Description:  The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Trail Patrol is offering this two-day, low-mileage backpacking format course designed to enhance your understanding of Leave No Trace practices and ethics and to increase your level of expertise and confidence in teaching Leave No Trace skills. Through focused activities, hands-on field experience and both formal and informal discussions, you will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace issues, expand your repertoire of low-impact skills and increase your effectiveness in teaching these important skills to others.  Participants should be experienced campers or backpackers.  Instruction will concentrate on the incorporation of low impact techniques in camping and backpacking settings, but we will not be teaching basic camping skills.  This is a fun course where all participants have a part in demonstrating the choices that can be made to minimize our impact on the land and our resources. 

On completion of this course, participants will be registered as Leave No Trace Trainers with the national Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and will receive a certificate of course completion as well as their Leave No Trace Trainer lapel pin.

What to Bring:  Personal backpacking gear.  All group gear, such as stoves, cooking equipment and water treatment will be supplied.  Participants should pack a trail lunch for Saturday and Sunday; all other meals will be provided.  At the time of registration participants will receive a planning packet that will include a detailed packing list.

Instructors:  Instructors are members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Trail Patrol who are also Leave No Trace Master Educators.

Cost: $45.00 for PATC Members, $65.00 for Non-PATC members.  Join PATC at the time of registration and get the member price!  The cost covers course materials and meals with the exception of lunch for Saturday and Sunday, which the participant should bring.

Where: Shenandoah National Park, VA

Who: Adults (18+).  This course takes place in and around a cabin facility in Shenandoah National Park.  All outdoor activities are conducted on the grounds in the immediate vicinity of the cabin.  There is no backpacking or other strenuous activity. Students have the option to stay overnight in the cabin facilities or pitch a tent outside.

Description:  The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Trail Patrol is offering this two-day, cabin format course designed to enhance your understanding of Leave No Trace practices and ethics and to increase your level of expertise and confidence in teaching Leave No Trace skills. Through focused activities, hands-on field experience and both formal and informal discussions, you will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace issues, expand your repertoire of low-impact skills and increase your effectiveness in teaching these important skills to others. What to Bring:   Participants will sleep in beds/cots inside the cabin, there are no linens supplied, so bring a sleeping bag and pillow.  The cabin has electricity, a full kitchen and modern bathroom.   Participants should pack a lunch for Saturday and Sunday all other meals will be provided.  At the time of registration participants will receive a planning packet that will include a detailed packing list.

Instructors:  Instructors are members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Trail Patrol who are also Leave No Trace Master Educators.

Leave No Trace Trainer Course | Bedford, Va

This is an afternoon into the evening Friday course, with a moderate hike and Breakfast as a sunrise hike!

Dates: April 13-14, 2012

Time: 4 pm Friday through 4 pm Saturday

Location:Claytor Nature Study Center, Bedford, Va.

Participants: College and community members ages 15 to adult with some outdoor experience and knowledge of ecology

Cost:

Camping: Included in course on site at the Claytor Nature Study Center

Description: The Outdoor Leadership Program at Lynchburg College offers a trainer course in Leave No Trace practices and ethics to increase your level of expertise and confidence in teaching Leave No Trace skills and philosophies.

Through focused activities and hands-on field experiences, you will be introduced to concepts, practices, and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace subjects. You will expand your range of minimal and low-impact skills and gain a greater ability to model and present the seven Leave No Trace principles to others.

Each participant will present a five to 10 minute presentation on a pre-selected topic while in a campsite, trail or river environment.

On completion of this course, you will be registered as a Leave No Trace trainer with the national Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and will receive a certificate of course completion as well as a Leave No Trace trainer lapel pin.

Eligibility: To participate, you should be an experienced hiker and have an interest in ecology.

Gear: Personal gear, shoes, boots, sleeping bags, clothing are on your own. (All group gear, such as stoves, cooking equipment, and water treatment will be supplied.) Head light and spare batteries a must. At the time of registration, you will receive a planning packet that will include a detailed packing list.

Food: You should eat lunch in advance on Friday, and pack snacks for all other times. You will be helping to prepare a Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast as shared meals.

Accommodations: You will be required to stay onsite (included) in the campground facilities.

Instructors: LC Outdoor Leadership Program coordinator Paul Stern is a Leave No Trace Master Educator and adjunct faculty in the outdoor recreation minor. Other instructors are student staff members of the Lynchburg College Outdoor Leadership Programs who are Leave No Trace Trainers.

 

LEAVE NO TRACE awareness workshop

When: April 21, 2012 @ 2:00pm-3:30pm

Where: Charlottesville, VA

Who: Open to anybody 9 years old and up.

Description: Come enjoy Charlottesville's beautiful scenery as we hike and learn the 7 Leave No Trace Principles whilel playing some fun, interactive games.

Cost: $8.00 for city residents / $12.00 for non-city residents.

Gear: No special gear required. Just comfortable hiking or tennis shoes.
